Has David Nalbandian finally gotten his groove?

Three reasons why I believe Nalbandian is the player to beat in 2008: 1).The ferocity and consisitency(not necessarily the smoothness or artistry)of his back hand is arguably unparalled in the circuit for now. 2).His serves are very consistent and dangerous, and 3)He has finally won the battle against mental toughness. Thanks to his new coach, for all these.Even Federer confirmed these facts after his two losses to David at the tail end of 2007.

The only reason Nalbandian did so well at the end of the year against top players, was because he was the more fresher player, considering he had barely played half the number of matches his opponents did. Had it been earlier in the season, he would NOT have beaten Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic. All 3 were tired at the end and played quite a bit of tennis, especially Nadal and Djokovic. His late-season power surge in 2007, doesn't guarantee success in 2008. Nalbandian fans can only hope that he picks up where he left off. If he is to start well, he'll have to do it in Australia, where he'll have to overcome the tough heat, and best of 5 set matches to succeed.

Let's see if he can find consistency over the course of a whole year, which is something he's never been able to do. We'll see what happens.

No No No No No No No No....and No.

This is a pattern with Nalbandian. and I stress a pattern. he will look great for about a month and win a few big events (never a Grand Slam though), then everyone thinks he will become a great player again...then he disappears for the next 9 months and then does it all over again.

A couple years ago, he beat Federer at the year end Masters Cup in 5 great sets. Everyone was thinking he would be a force on the tour. Then you dont hear his name again for 3/4 of a year until he makes another run.

He is too injury prone. His game isnt big enough. He lacks a weapon. and the main reason why he was successful at the end of this year was because Djokovic was burnt out, Nadal was injured, and Federer was coming back from a 6-week layoff....and he was by far the freshest of anyone on tour.

I wouldn't say he is the player to beat in 08, but he is definitely one to watch. He played great at Madrid and Paris and seems to have lost a little weight. If he can maintain his focus, nerves and appetite I could see him peaking at #2 next year (not ending at #2 but reaching #2).

I think the Australian will be the telling point as to where he is and will be. If he wins or makes the finals I think he can be a force, but it remains to be seen if he will ever win a slam. He is not getting any younger and will be 26 on new years. He has already sustained enough nagging injuries to know that he is highly susceptible to reinjuring his abs, back and legs.

The younger guys are ready to make their mark and these are usually the guys that give David the most trouble. We shall see in a few weeks if he is up for the challenge

There is no doubt that David Nalbandian is a player to beat in the coming season 2008. He has the style, tactics, determination. There is no doubt theat he has really gotten his groove. We hope he would not sustain injury in the 2008 tournaments.
