It's becoming more and more common. Never happened until the 1990 Giants. Now, the Pats didn't make it after their first super bowl, the Steelers missed last year, the Chargers in the mid 90s, The Giants again after losing to Baltimore, Its happened quite a bit. Chicago will do it this year.

The 2002 NE pats won the SB the year before, then posted a 9-7 record that year and missed the playoffs when at the last week of the season the GB packers failed to beat the NY jets, crowning them the AFC east champs instead of the pats.
Im a huge pats fan and that season sucked.

In the last seven or eight years, the loser of the superbowl has missed the playoffs the very next year except once and that was Seattle last year. Chicago, Oakland, Giants, just to name a couple. I can't tell you the rest off the top of my head.
