Is Harlem, NY dangerous?
Is Harlem, NY dangerous? If I walked around there at late night, will I get shot or mugged? Thanks!

I think it depends very much on where in Harlem you go. It's a VERY big neighborhood.
I personally feel quite safe on 125th Street, and around there. There are some really nice residential blocks, too, that have been recently renovated where the people DO go out at night and it's quite neighborly.
Then there are some areas, 20 blocks or so north of there, where I would NOT feel safe.
Just use your own common sense. Walk with the crowd, don't go places that are isolated or deserted by yourself, and if a place feels dangerous, you probably shouldn't be there.
But this is true of any area, honestly.

Depends on what part of Harlem you live. Harlem has seen a major turn around in the 15 to 20 years, its no longer the dangerous place to live or visit. Many people from other parts of the city are renting or buying apartments in Harlem because of its major turn around. The cops has kept the crime and drug activity in Harlem low for the last 15 year.
So Harlem is not the Harlem you used to see on 6 o'clock a few years ago. Its has become safer and a better place to live and visit, especially late at night. If you don't believe me check the two links below.

What part of Harlem exactly?? For instance there are some really nice and rich neighborhoods in West Harlem. That's where Colombia is (prestigious ivy league college). East Harlem is a different story. However, the lower part of East Harlem is Spanish Harlem. You won't be harassed there because you're Hispanic. (you won't really get harassed in any part nyc for your race really, except for some rare occasions, nyc is a pretty diverse place). I visit this part many times. A lot of college kids have started to move in there in some parts. But I still say to be careful. There are also some pretty bad parts in Harlem.

I really depends where in Harlem. NYC is a much safer city but you need to be careful regardless where in the city, specially at night. I live in Spanish Harlem (110th and 2nd Ave) and I find it really safe but I am always cautions late at night.
If you are walking on a desert block of Harlem just watch behind to make sure is safe. Crowded streets should be totally fine.

It's funny how people defend Harlem by saying you can be shot anywhere in NYC at night -
I don't agree and I think that in a city of nearly 8.5 million people there are not very many violent crimes, particularly murders.
Much of it does have to do with what you look like and I believe there is a large amount that has been affected by the real estate boom that gentrified many neighborhoods that were previously unchanged for a good amount of time. Now you see fancy new buildings with new folks that stand out and that doesn't bode well for integration.
Clearly if you're skin color or way of dressing are different than many of the people around you then you will stand out and have a greater chance of being noticed and potentially a target but that has more to do with human nature than anything else. Folks who grew up in dangerous parts of the city know one another like you know your neighbors.

Conquering New York in one visit is difficult because is a big city like you will discover with Hotelbye . In New York you will see the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and significantly more. Empire State Building helps it be worth braving the long lines, high ticket prices and dizzying heights to see the city from a top this storied building. Built in 1931, the skyscraper may be the second-tallest creating in New York and is one of the most quick representations of Gotham, therefore much to ensure that it's performed a function in films such as for instance King Kong, An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle.

During the day, Harlem is NOT that bad. As long as you stay within the main streets (125th, Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd., Frederick Douglass Blvd, Lenox Ave, St. Nicholas Avenue, etc.) it is not as bad. More whites are walking around in Harlem and it seems to be "acceptable".
However at night....the chances of getting shot or mugged there (mainly mugged) are high! You definitely DO NOT want to be walking along the numbered streets (as in West 1_ _ ), since those streets are more deserted and trouble can be found.
UPDATE: The latest statistics on crime show that only 3 homicides occurred in the 28th Precinct in Harlem (right at the center)...a drop of 73%!
