Should I take my 1 yr old pit out to go to the bathroom at any time of night, or should I let him wait till AM

My dog is one year old.

Part of me thinks that if I am awake at 2AM (which I sometimes am), I should take my dog out whenever he goes to the door.

The other part of me says that I should not take him out because he needs to stay on a schedule so he doesnt think its ok to wake me at 2AM if I am sleeping.

Right now my dog wakes me at approx 4:30 every morning. Even though I dont get up until 6.

Am I encouraging this behavior by taking him out in the middle of the night when I am awake?

How can I get my dog to stop waking me at 4:30AM

You didn't say if you work or are at home all day.

    This can make a difference.

If you are at home all day it will be easy to re-train his *nature* calls.

I am at home say so my dogs are fed in the AM with another small feeding in the afternoon.

They are let out *on demand* during the day and once more about 9pm and that's it until the next morning.

I have 4 dogs of my own....2 Border Collies, 1 Black Lab and 1 Beagle. They are on a strict schedule in the evenings and at night.

During the day (if/when we are home) they go out when they ask (they actually spend a lot of time outdoors in the nice weather). In the evening, they go out about 9:00 p.m. and once again at 11:00 p.m. Then they are in for the night.

They settle right down and so to sleep. We normally are up about 6:30 a.m. (sometimes 7) and we let them out.

The only time we let our dogs out in the middle of the night is if we know that one is not feeling well and/or has had the "runs" (rare but happens).

A one year old dog should be easily able to "hold it" from late evening until morning. Chances are that your dog is trying to "rule" you instead of the other way around. So, yes, you are encouraging the behavior. Tell the dog to go back to sleep!

    Good luck!

If you get up at 2AM say and let him out every night, it will become a habit. If you suddenly stop getting up at 2AM, the dog will still want to go out. You should arrange his schedule so that he is eating and drinking, pee and poop before bed, say at 11. That way he should be able to sleep thru the night til 6 or so. Shouldn't be a problem at 1 year of age.

Learn his eating and bathroom habits and try not to feed him or give him any thing to drink while its time to sleep like between 11 and 5 try feeding around 6 or so and have a last walk around 10 or right before bed that why by morning he may only have to duece since no water was givien to him for 6 or so hours which is just enough for a dog to sleep....I agree with Border Rocks

My female wakes me up at around 4:30 a.m. IF she hasn't been out long enough at night (around 10:00 p.m.) to do her business. When it's raining hard or bitterly cold I can count on the through the night potty break and it doesn't really upset me because I'd rather take her out than have her pee in the house. Both my dogs were up through the night last night because I had company and they didn't get all their walks in. Again, it doesn't bother me because I'd rather take them out than get in the habit of peeing in the house. Good luck.

If you take your dogs water away 2 hours before you retire and then let your dog out before going to bed; a 1 year old will be fine waiting until you get up in the morning!

Do not let your dog dictate your schedule! You are the pack leader not him....

I agree, you shouldn't let him get used to waking you up whenever he needs to go instead of waiting until you decide its time to wake up. If you don't want to wake up so early you can either ignore him completely (but be aware this may mean he'll have accidents in the night), or you can slowly start waking up later and later. E.g if he wants to wake up at 4.30, wait for 5 minutes before letting him out. The next morning, wait for another few minutes, and so on so forth. Or if you don't want to do either of those things, you could always let him sleep outside. Unless of course there are snakes and the like in your area.

    So yeah hope I helped

This canines could no longer be used to protecting her potty all evening if she grew to become into allowed to apply the paper. the excellent thank you to coach a canines to hold it extremely is potty is to purchase a kennel and at shop her nutrition and water dish in it and at evening positioned her interior the kennel all evening long. A canines won't flow to the bathing room the place it eats so after a pair of nights with plausible injuries, she will have the potential to end going at evening.

take him out less and less during the night as he gets older he will be able to hold it throughout the whole night. Around 2 years old your dog will learn. But when he has accidents at night just show him that is not acceptable. Good luck!

Just be sure to take him out just before you go to sleep. If you wake up anyways at 2 AM let him outside because you say you're up anyways. Then if he wakes you up at 4:30 am make him wait until 6am when you get up. That is what i did with my Boxer she'd sometimes wake me up and hour before i had to get up. I'd make her wait. she never had any mistakes in the house.
