Biotechnology is one of the biggest boons of the 21st century. We have left the times when it was sufficient to build a machine to do whatever you wanted to do; now we turn to organisms to help us solve problems we otherwise wouldn't be able to solve.

One of the biggest things in biotechnology is genetic engineering. Here, usually single-celled organisms are genetically engineered to produce medicines or other useful chemicals that would otherwise be way too complicated to produce cheaply using standard manufacturing techniques. It is easy and cheap: suppose you need a specific kind of medicine in large quantities that is much too costly to make by hand. Instead, you take a large vat filled with genetically-engineered microorganisms, feed them some sugar, water and other easy-to-get nutrients, and presto! You have your medicine, at no more cost than it took to get that water and sugar.
