How Do I check the annoying amber engine light on 1997 toyota camry?

It seems like it turns on and off when ever it feels like.

I have a 97 Camry that I bought 18 months ago and fairly soon the light started doing the same thing. After a few months I took it to Autozone and they hook it up to a computer for free. It came back as bad EGR valve. They run $140!! Well I didn't get it right away. After a couple months it started doing it more often and the car started idling very poorly. Sometimes it would stall. I finally coughed up the dough and changed it myself. It only took about 45 minutes and It has been running great with no dummy lights. Anyway take it to autozone and have them plug it in. Good luck

At most auto parts stores they sell a device that attaches to a connector that tells you why the light is coming on. In most cases the intermittent light is not a major issue, but if your like me you will want to know what it is. The code reader device cost around 100 dollars and it is simple to use and you don't have to pop the hood. They come with a CD that tells you what the the code means and you can turn off the light and reset the codes to give you a clean start if your trying to isolate a problem. I bought one and it has save my friends and I hundreds...they are universial on cars made after 96.

My guess it your case is a faulty #2 02 sensor located right before your exhaust manifold, or your gas cap has lost it's seal and when you fill up the light goes off and when the tank gets low it comes back on.

1997? For a10 years old car you are lucky that you only have a minor problem.

You should check your emission control. Take it to your neighborhood mechanic. They will attach a diagnostic machine and come up with a code.

They reset it using the code and the light will stop flickering.

Another reason could be faulty wiring. This is a pain in the a33 to locate the prob. Your bulb could be faulty. If the step one (diagnostic machine) did not work, the next you do is to replace the bulb. If the problem still persists, you are siht out of luck.

Generally when the check engine light goes on and off it will throw a code. More that likely in your case it is the oxygen sensor (one of them) going out. When you rev up the engine the engine light will go out until the sensor has completely gone. Good luck

It Means You Need To Check Your Engine Or There Must Be Something Wrong With The Engine

Most cars have a check engine light. It doesn't necessarily mean that a major problem exits. It could be low on coolant, low on oil, fuel injectors might be clogged, etc. If all of the above are ok, the best thing to do is bring the car to your mechanic for further analysis.

It means the shift solenoid has gone bad, or there's a problem with the wiring going to it. Cost to repair will depend on what the problem is, as well as where you get it fixed.
