How do I keep my dog from barking when I'm leaving the house?

I have an 9 month old English Mastiff. She doesn't bark or make noise until she sees me leaving the house. Then she makes a terrible racket -- howling, whining, barking, and throwing herself against the door after I've shut it.

My current neighbors are really loud people, and haven't bothered to say anything (I guess since they figure I haven't reported their parties, they won't report me). But now I'm moving, and I can't count on my new neighbors being tolerent. What do I do?

I can't correct her. Opening the door just rewards her when I come back in, no matter how much I yell or if I squirt her with a water bottle. She's just so happy to see me, it doesn't matter.

If she is making a fuss and you come back- to comfort her, whatever, she's learning that at some point, when she does enough, it works to get you back! So, she'll keep doing it every time. In nature, dogs generally stay in their packs most or all the time. What would make sense to her is to be really tired when it's time for you to leave. Then, it would only make sense for her to stay behind, in her mind. Take her on a long walk/jog in the morning. Maybe even teach her to jog on a treadmill. Maybe you can have a certain toy she only gets to have when you leave. Maybe buy one of those toys that you squirt the food inside? Let her smell it, tell her to sit and stay, give it to her, and leave. You are the leader. Leave with confidence. If you're uncertain, she'll use that against you in one way or another. At other times, do regular discipline and exercise with her. The most balanced she is, the less likely she'll have problems like this. Best of luck!!! :)
