Why does 1 year old cough all night long?

My one year old daughter almost always has coughing fits in her sleep. It doesn't seem to matter if she has a cold or not, although it is worse when she is sick. The pediatrician has checked this 5 or 6 times and advises a clean room with a humidifier which we have done---and we have no pets.

She even had a chest x-ray to make sure everything was fine.

We tried to raise one end of the crib---but she rolls around so much that she ends up at the opposite end. We have a humidifier and a vicks vaporizer and have tried both. We put vicks for kids or infant rub on her chest. We have tried small amounts of cough medicine---nothing works. Any suggestions?

She has actually seen a variety of doctors---our regular pediatrician as well as doctors on call.

could be some sort of asthma triggered by an allergy. Maybe she's allergic to something in her room or something that is coming in through your heating ducts...dust, mold, etc. Since you've had her checked 5 or 6 times with a pedi I think it might be a good idea to go to a specialist.

It does have to do with him laying down for a long period and the drainage, however small, is irritating his throat and chest. In addition to some of the other suggestions, you can also try giving him a warm, steamy shower or bath before bed and keeping a vaporizer on in his room. Elevate the head of his bed or give him 2 pillows to prop him up a bit so he isn't completely flat in bed. If you can get him to drink some warm fluid - apple juice, tea or something right before bed, it might help. Before giving any more OTC meds, call your ped. A cough can linger for a couple of weeks so they may not want to see him but might be able to give a script for a cough medicine.

See a respiratory doctor now. Infants with any sort of a respiratory problem can be deadly. Your child's problem could be anything from pneumonia-flu-sinus infection. You probally need a perscription medication to treat something of this severity becasue most OTC treatments don't help in time. Immediate care center or doctor immediately is all I can say.Best of Luck!
