Playstation 3 Backward compatibility??

I have just bought my sons a PS3, 80 Gig model. They tried to put in a PS2 game and they got a message asking for a memory card.

How do i set up my system so they can play PS2 games as well as PS 3 games?

Thanks

Update:

a follow up question:

do i need a physical mc or is it virtual? Sorry for the stupid questions but I am new to the game stuff.

You go to Games then Internal Memory card. From there it will ask you to create a PS2 or PS1 mc. Select PS2 mc assign it a slot(1 preferebly) then it will detect it then you can save games. And Play PS2.

Its the Harddrive inside the PS3, the 80GB is how much the HD is and the mc is the HD, its virtual i guess. Cause you dont need a PS2 mc, the ps3 itself has the ps2 mc inside it. if its too complicated i will simplify it more.

Create "Internal Memory Card(s)" under games for saving PS1 & PS2 games- and be sure to assign it to slot 1 or 2. You can also purchase a Memory Card Adaptor for PS3 (about $15) that will allow you to copy old PS1&2 save files onto your new PS3. :)
