My cat is scared of everything?

I have two cats, one is really playful and evrything. he might as well just be a dog, haha. The other though, the oldest, is scared of everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. She won't let anyone but me hold her, just because I'm always around her, you know? But I'll walk by her with shoes on, and she freaks out and runs away. she's not liek that without shoes though. And then if you're sitting down on the couch or something, and make a sudden movement, she jumps, and sometimes runs away. It's so strange. She's been like this for so long. She wasn't like this when I first got her though. Is it normal? I mean, you make one movement and she's gone.

Update:

Also, I'll be petting, and she purs like crazy, but then randomaly, with no warning, she'll grab my hand and bite me! It doesn't hurt or anything, and she doesn't use her claws, but she gets so mad.

If she suddenly bites you, she got overstimulated. Just pay attention to her ears. Often they go back if you have petted too much. That it is not a hard bite indicates you have done one stroke too much for her.

For the other issue, some cats are simply skittish. It may be an imprint from when she was a tiny kitten, and a sound triggers a danger signal in her mind. You can only just try and reassure you, go over to her with your hand out and talk to her. It may never change, and I bet she is very loyal just to you.

Some kittens love to be around everyone, but if that does not happen every day, they can change and become skittish around other people.

My male cat is afraid of nothing. My older female whom I recently had to put down was afraid of her own shadow. She loved to be petted and scratched but any loud noise she'd jump. The vaccum was the worse! It's just the personality of your cat. I don't think you can change it and the older they get the more paranoid they may become.

The new female I got is still a bit frightened but I got her from a shelter so it's normal.

When your kitty runs from a loud noise approach her slowly and just pet her and tell her it's okay so she feels comforted that the noise isn't going to hurt her.

Is it possible that the addition of the other cat upset her? If she started acting this way around the time you got the other, that seems likely.

But either way I'd start with something like a Feliway diffuser - as many as you can manage. You plug them in and they dispense pheromones which have a calming effect on the cat.

It wouldn't hurt to mention the behavior to the vet, if you haven't already. Although it sounds to me like emotional issues, you just never know.

was this cat from a possibly abusive home if so he could just be scared, if not he probably didn't socialize with other humans when he was a kitten, try telling guests to be quieter around the scardey cat and let him sniff them because he probably needs different human contact other than you.

as for sitting on the couch or the shoes try to slowly get the cat ajusted to sudden movents as for the shoes let the cat play with the shoe laces untill your cat dosnt mind the smell of shoes and walk quieter.

It's normal for a lot of cats. Some are naturally skittish.

If you have ever hurt her by accident then she is still scared. Or if you got her from someone then she might be remembering bad times- that's exactly what happend with my cat. Good luck!! =^.^=

you just explained my cat to the "T"! she's almost a year and seems to be getting better, but only with me.

I think maybe it's just her personality.
