Is soon as you ingest it, it begins absorbing through your stomach. That is why having a full stomach can increase the time it takes to feel the effects of alcohol. The food can slow the absorption because it has absorbed alcohol and also creates a barrier for the lining of your stomach. All of the alcohol will get into your system eventually though.
It takes one Hour though to oxidize one ounce of alcohol. So if you drink a shot of liquor it takes one hour for that alcohol to be removed from your system.

it takes roughly 3 hours for the alcohol to fully absorb into the blood stream. This can be altered by how much you drink, body weight, and type of drinks. Beer will take longer to absorb than drinking shots.
