Trying to find a few new books to read and could use a little help.?

I enjoyed Anne Rice, Star Wars books, some of Dean Koontz books, and Dan Brown. I enjoy fiction that is about monsters, far out occult things, witches, demons, basically spooky stuff that "could" happen if monsters and vampires really did exist. Some Sci-FI, but from what I have seen... thats only a Star Wars thing for me. Any suggestions? Book title, author, maybe a short explanation about what the book is about.

Oh.... I really dislike Stephen King.

Update:

Wow. Thanks for all the answers. I am gonna go try out some of these and see where it goes!

    Check out Clive Cussler. He has done a great number of books on his character "Dirk Pitt". they are kind of james bond like and are really good. The movie "Sahara" was based off one of his books but the books are much better than the movie was. Great cast of characters that makes each book more interesting as you get involved with the characters. Inca Gold was a really good one.

    The Time Traveler's Wife

    I'm not sure who the author is but a friend of mine who reads books has read it several times and it is her favorite book. I trust her because most of the books she has recommended to me have been really good.

    It's not super sci-fi and I know it takes place in Chicago.

    A book I have read is The Kite Runner. The movie is out now but I would recommend reading the book first. I really really enjoyed it. It's about Afghanistan prior to the Soviet occupation. It is a story about a boy, his father and his best friend. It follows the boy through until adulthood and then connects back to his childhood where he must make ammends for things he did in his childhood.

    Lastly, my favorite book is A Prayor for Owen Meany by John Irving. It's not exactly Sci Fi but the main character (Owen) does have special abilities and has a purpose in life that is revealed at the end of the book. It's told mostly from the point of view of Owen's best friend and takes place in the 60's and 70's. This book had me laughing and crying at the same time and peeking at the end because I was so anxious to find out what happened. It takes a couple chapters to get into but I promise it is worth it!

    HAve you read Richard Laymon? I enjoy his books. "Traveling Vampire Show" was the first I read and it definately falls into the "spooky stuff that could happen" group."

    Basically these kids try to get into the traveling vampire show and along the way they run into so rough and spooky characters. Some of his others works are: "Body Rides" "Darkness Tell Us" and "That night in Lonesome October." They are all really good, I will warn you though, at times he does get dirty.

    If your into vampires, read the Twilight series, its written very well but its also a little younger then the book u have listed, so be patient through the first part of the book, because near the end it gets really good.

    Also for future stuff, the Uglies series is really really interesting.

    my favorite author is R A Salvatore.

    He really writes well.

    I have read the drow series and the beloved character Drizz't do'Urden.

    But if you happen to read his books, start with Homeland because he wrote Icewind Dale first, which is like, the 7th of the series.

    RA Salvatore also wrote one of the episodes in Star Wars.

    You'll love his books. They retail from Forgotten Realms, Dragon Lance and other fiction/fantasy publishers

    I wont give a summary but a web site kay( : [My summaris are REALLY long so thats why}

    Try twilight its so good its going to be put in like 20 lanuages or something plus a movie dont listen to what others say and read it for yourself! If you like Twilight then get the sequel Newmoon and then get Eclipse and the new on thats coming out I think this year. Or get Maximum Ride its about these kids that have wings etc. its awsome really it draws you into the story so much despite my very very small and lame description of it. Or you can also try something new like: anime or manga which are good {Japense comics:manga and Japense cartons:anime{look it up on wikapedia in google} The japenese {original} versions are way better then the american one so if some were bad that might be one of the reasons theres a whole bunch of scifi and etc. in those. Even if your NOT into foreign stuff their really good! I have never liked forein films {but I ve read foreingn books} even if I watch all of it and I can always finish a good anime/manga!

    {Just in case you think its for little kids:

    Q: Why are some animes rated PG-13 and above?

    Aren't they all just cartoons for kids?

    A: Nope. That's probably the biggest difference between American animation and Japanese animation. There are animes for all ages of people. This is largely due to the influence of Osamu Tezuka, the creator of 'Astro Boy.' In the 1950s and 1960s Tezuka's drawings were everywhere; from children's picture books to women's or men's magazines to political comic strips in newspapers. The anime 'Astro Boy' was based Tezuka's comic book 'Astro Boy.' He established the cultural idea that animation was an ok way of storytelling for all age groups. The picture to the right is from 'Grave of the Fireflies.' (1988) It's about a boy and his little sister, and the story of how they try to survive and perhaps live with dignity, still, in the aftermath of World War II.}

    Thus streetwise Jack meets the more bookish Benedict and the two become firm friends - and co-conspirators. Ben has seen and heard horrific things. Jack is fascinated by his story and determined to prevent similar things happening in his own city. Together they seek to defeat Camazotz - the vampiric bat god who destroyed the Mayan civilization that destroyed him.

    I would say The Oath by Frank Peretti and Monster by Frank Peretti. Also, The Cobra Event by Richard Preston and The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. The latter are about killer diseases. One is non-fiction (The Hot Zone, but reads like fiction) where the disease actually gets out and the other is fiction but could potentially happen.
