I believe I am bipolar, but cannot see a doctor...?

I was hospitalized after a failed suicide attempt and diagnosed with depression. They prescribed me Prozac and for a while I was incredibly happy.

I became very hyperactive and outgoing; I thought that the hyperactivity was part of my personality, but I started to get irritable and I couldn't stand it when people touched me. I started experiencing confused, racing thoughts, anxiety, random fear, and I started hearing things.

Having gone through several swings over the past few years I believe I am bipolar. My mother believes I am faking all of this (suicide attempt, panic attacks, and all the symptoms) and will not provide me with help.

In the meantime I've gotten so much worse. If someone touches me I have to rub my arms or I feel anxious. I sometimes don't know where/who I am...

Does anyone have any coping ideas or ways to help myself without a doctor? I am seriously unhinged and I scare myself now...

Thank You

See bipolar disorder, at ezy-build * (below) in section 10, and take the quiz, if unsure, and if the results are positive, ensure you get an expert diagnosis from a mental health professional, not doctors, who are much better dealing with physical ailments, and don't diagnose complex disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder often enough to develop any real expertise. Bipolar disorder usually involves major moodswings, which occur without apparent cause, and often over many months, or a matter of years, rather than days, as with most people (unless rapid cycling). I'd take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements daily, replacing 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements in the winter months. I recommend trying Lithium Carbonate, or Lithium Citrate (regular tests are necessary, for these), before trying the other mood stabilisers, but if you aren't good at taking medications regularly, drinking adequate water, and keeping up your salt intake, something else may suit you better. Always check out anything first at http://www.drugs.com/, so you will be aware of the risks, and on the lookout for side effects. (Personally, if I wasn't bipolar type 1, and didn't experience hallucinations, or serious delusional states, I know I'd first try the orthomolecular and Omega 3 fish oil supplements, vitamins, minerals, and mostly raw food diet, for several months. I'd aso eat in accordance with my "nutritional type". Enter that term in the searchbar at http://www.mercola.com/ ). If not considerably improved, after several months, consult your primary mental health care provider. If bipolar type 1, an antipsychotic medication may also be needed. Everyone should take the Omega 3 supplements, or preferably "krill oil" for its other health benefits: use the searchbar at http://www.mercola.com/ . Some people refuse medication, using supplements, and a selective, mostly raw food diet (I do not recommended trying this, if bipolar 1, unless you aren't troubled by hallucinations, or delusional states). Maintain the treatments for the depressive phase, in section 2, at * http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris See suicidal thoughts, and panic attacks, in sections 5 and 8. You can order Lithium Orotate online, or check out vitamin & health food stores, but it needs to be enhanced with folic acid, but this will mostly help with moodswings, and takes time. Visit your school counselor. Print the results of the quiz, and take along to the doctor, next time, and ask for a referral, on that basis. You may well be suffering from bipolar disorder type 1, which requires antipsychotics: try to get to see a doctor ASAP!

If your mother won't listen to you, and you are in school, I would contact a counselor at the school and tell them how you feel and your whole situation. Parents are only human and sometimes they aren't right.

The fact that you are asking for help is very good and that is the first step.

Also it is really important if you have any kind of chemical imbalance going on that you eat healthy, stay away from sugar, caffeine, alcohol and any other type of drug, and try to stay away from packaged foods and food coloring. You should exercise, even if it is just walking for a half an hour a day. Sometimes just doing these things will make you feel 100% better. Having interests or hobbies will also give you something else to think about and focus on and give your life more meaning. I have noticed that the happiest people are the ones who have interests, and the more the better.

I used to have panic attacks all the time, and I realized that they always go away. So after a while when I started to have one I would just tell myself that it was a panic attack and it would eventually go away. After a while I didn't get them at all anymore.

Good luck and don't give up. And please don't kill yourself. There are so many things to live for on this planet. It may not seem like it all the time, but if you look you will find them. And the internet is full of things to read about. Read about bi-polar disorder and see what other people are doing to help themselves. The internet is a wonderful resource for anything and it can keep you and your mind busy forever.

Have you spoken with a psychiatrist or any kind of medical professional about your suspicions? B/c I was diagnosed five years ago when I became absolutely manic. I could not stop talking to people and calling everyone I could. I would not sleep for days at a time. My mother worked for a psychiarist and recognized the signs.

I was able to get on board with a psychiatrist who put me on Lexapro and Valproate. I also sometimes have to take a Zanex.

But it does sound like you may be bipolar. Don't let anyone influence your thoughts. If you think you are, seek help from a psychiatric professional. There is no shame in it.

My guilts and thoughts that I would be considered crazy actually ended me up in aI lost home and husband. So seek help immediately!

Take care and all the best to you going in to this next year!!!

Oh - and keep a journal until you get to the doctor - write what you feel that day (anxiety or depression or aggitaion, or whatever) and how it has interfered with your life.

Make sure that the doctors are aware that you suffer from very big highs to very big lows.

It depends on how old you are. I wouldn't diagnose you with bi-polar until you are an adult. Are you still taking the Prozac? Prozac can cause people to feel hyperactive and/or irritable.

Thing is, adolescence causes mood swings to some degree so it depends on how severe these mood swings are, how long they last and how they affect your life.

As for your problems with being touched, I would say that's more of an anxiety issue or OCD trait. (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

Without your mom's support, I would request to see the guidance counselor at school and ask if there are any resources she/he can hook you up with. Explain your symptoms, etc. They might be able to talk to your mom or at least meet with you a few times to offer some coping strategies.

I would also avoid caffeine and sugar as much as possible. They will just add to your irritability. Also avoid drugs and alcohol at all costs!!

So, after your hospitalization, your mom did not continue with follow-up treatment? She thinks you're faking it? Continue to talk to her about your fears and what's happening to you. I'm sure she doesn't want another suicide attempt. Don't give up. Perhaps the more you tell her, she may eventually come around.

You could even have Schitzophrenia I am wondering. Can't you see a Doctor about this? It is risky to self-diagnose. Is there no health help line you can ring where you live. Your mother obviously doesn't believe in the possibility of you having a mental illness which needs attending to. She just hopes it will all go away and maybe she worries about social stigma. If it is bipolar disorder well the depressive side of that can evidently be so very hard to put up with for the sufferer. The fact that you say you started hearing things should definitely be looked into. Is there no mental health authority in your area?? You need to get to the reason for your feelings as there are drugs that can help you. Good luck. The fact that you tried to take your own life surely would have set you up for ongoing counselling and surely this type of service should be free??? It is good that you yourself are aware you need help so please try to get that help.

You need to see a doctor. It could be a reaction to the medication, a physical problem or you may be bi-polar. Anyone of the above could cause the other so please get yourself checked out. You should be proud of the fact that you are wise enough to figure out you need help. I've seen too many people not want help or stop taking their medication. If you're like me, you'll do anything to get better. Taking pills, eating right, standing on one foot, whatever the doctor suggests. :')

  • Congratulations on understanding and caring for your mental health!

I'm not sure what state you live in or your age. Please call a local hospital? Ask about voluntary admittance to the psychiatric ward if you are a minor. Because it is voluntary you will be able to have some say in when you are discharged. Also, your parents' insurance will have to take care of any charges or else the state will pay the hospital fee. Best wishes for your health.

If you are having such sever issues you need to see a dr. ESPECIALLY if you are scaring yourself with your actions and moods.

Why can't you see a dr? If it is money call around to see if there are any who will be willing to see you on a payment plan. Or if you can check yourself into a county mental health facility.

Do NOT let this go untreated. Seek help if you feel you need it. To not do so is only causing a disservice to yourself.
