neighbors complaining about dogs barking?
i have 2 outside dogs, a lab/beagle mix (dont ask lol) and a cocker spaniel mix. our yard is on the side of a mountain so it is sloped downhill with the street being at the very top
anyway we have the electric fence around our yard because that was cheaper than fencing the whole yard and it doesnt look as bad. the dogs have learned it very well. they bark when people walk by though and always at the neighbors dog. the lady who lives down the road has spoken to us twice how she is afraid of them and we have told her there is no possible way they will cross the line.
yesterday we got a letter in the mail threatening legal action on how they can arrest us for this according to some new county policy and its against the deed restrictions in the backyard and that we neeed to fence them in. the thing is, they will still bark in the backyard if we had a fence. what should we do? im planning on writing a letter back to her but dont know what to put
well she researched an article in the news paper about how barking dogs can lead to tickets and they dont have to do the decibel system anymore?
we put them in every night. they are outside before we leave in the morning (7 am) till around 8 pm when we bring them in and feed them in their carriers. that way they dont get cold at night but the neighbor still doesnt think its enough??
they are only out DURNING THE DAY. besides this lady lives to far away for her to hear them at night. she gets scared when she walks by the road around the block cause they bark at her

First research the county policy and the deed restriction and find out exactly if it applies to your situation. If it does, you probably need fence the property.
They probably can't arrest you, especially if your dogs have never left the property, but they probably can fine you for having barking dogs and they can force you to comply on the fencing if it is indeed the law.
Sometimes people are just blowing smoke but you need to find out what the rules are before you can act. In either case, you need to address the barking problem. Can the dogs be inside at night? A citronella collar may also help.

She may have the upper hand here if the new ordinance is on her side. Electric fencing isn't considered sufficient in many areas. We had neighbors whose dogs stepped out of the yard whenever the owners weren't watching and menaced people and animals walking by. Of course, there are also neighborhood dogs who leap their chain link fencing to do the same.Try introducing her to the dogs and reducing her fear of them. Maybe you could put up a sign that indicates there is a fence so that walkers are not frightened by the threat of dog attack. When people are phobic of dogs, there is little you can do to reason with them. Good luck.
EDIT: If it is only rare to occasional barking, you are OK. If the dogs bark constantly, you need to bring them inside. You will be ticketed. Besides, everyone deserves a little peace and quiet.
EDIT: Then she is being a bother. Bake her cookies and nicely tell her you are doing all you intend to do and are required to do by law. Let her know you value her as a neighbor, but the dogs are family and she will have to either get over it or take you to court. Put a lawyer on retainer today.

You should put up a nice fence for them. It might cost quite a bit, but is this really worth all the trouble? You could also try a bark collar, those supposedly work well.
I have two dogs that rarely bark. They are outside dogs, living in the backyard sleeping in dog houses. The nice thing is, I live in a small neighborhood with seniors and a few young families(most have dogs).

Well i think that lady is not a good n. I have a n. is the same as her....He called the police, he called animal control....They came to my house leaved a notice and when we did nothing he called animal control agian, this time the animal control put a recorde in the neghibor (him and the nextdoor) to monitor how long that my dog bark and when. Later it came out nothing. the dog only bark when he is around my back yard and when the kid throw a ball in to the backyard door only. Don't worry let the law make an action, they have their way to solve problem not that lady. She is just ....I am believe in the law they are fair

Bring the dogs inside at night. Barking dogs are extremely annoying. You will have to put up a fence if your county demands one. Maybe you could ask for a hearing to explain your situation.

As long as they remain on your property, i dont think she could make you get a fence. Just because a dog barks, dosnt mean he will bite. If she is fearful then why does she go by your yard.

wow...k, just say exactly what you just did say...that they will bark no matter what they are protected by. Do some research on electric fences, showing the police that they are totally safe for your dogs and neighbors. DON"T give in lol...good luck.

well, she is right and you are right.
The dogs could cross the line if they wanted too, they would just have to be shocked to do it. she has a right to complain if she feels threatened or annoyed by the dogs.
EDIT~ If they are just barking at her, she needs to just avoid them. tell her this.
on the other hand, it is unlikely they will escape, and it is your right to keep your dogs outside. having a fence wouldn't change a thing.
i suggest telling her you understand what she is saying, but telling her it wouldn't help a thing.

i feel your pain, my dogs are indoor dogs, only going outside for toilet times.. and yes they do bark if someone comes near our fence or if another dog goes by.. and my neighbour accused them of barking all DAY LONG!!! yet they are not out all day... i tried being nice to her and explained they are not out all day long and she got nasty with me! shouting and stuff.. threatening to take it further and report them, i told her to go for it.. as i know my dogs are inside most of the day, i also stay at home with them during the day so i know for a fact they dont bark all day long...
my dogs only go outside about 4/5 times a day for the toilet and by 9pm they are fast asleep as they have a bedtime routine..
i hope you can get things sorted out...
Put in your letter about the electric fence and how they would never cross it..
ADD :
forgot to say this same neighbour shouted at my kids to shut up during the daytime for playing outside...

Try bringing her to your house to meet your dogs.
It will serve a two fold purpose...she will get to know them and that they are not dangerous...the other thing it will do is get your dogs more familiar with her so they don't bark at her when she walks by.
Hope this is a help.
