Help! My dog keeps eatting cat food and cat poop?

Someone had left this cute little puppy in my front yard so I took him in. Well now I have a problem with him eatting the cat food and getting in the kitty box to eat cat poop..(yuk!) Not only does he get in the cat box, but he sometimes puts the poop on my bed and on the couch...I dont want to get rid of him, but I dont know what else do except maybe put up a kid gate and see if that will keep him out of the cat box....

All dogs will do that.. The easiest way to keep a dog out of the litter box is to set up a baby gate in the doorway of the room the litter box is in. The cat can jump over the gate, but the dog can't..

OR,you can try a different litter boxes.. Some people use the larger size rubbermaid tote with the lid on them, they just cut a hole in the middle of the lid for the cat to go in and out of..

I just use the baby gate method myself..

Ooh have I been there! Answer to the food is to raise it. Answer to the litter box - get a box with a lid. Then, turn the box around so the cat door faces the wall with enough space for the cats but not enough for the dog. Now, these may or may not work depending on the size of the dog. If the dog is large, you may have to put the cat food very high and give the cats a way to jump up to wherever it is. If the dog is large, turning the litter boxes around should work great (unless the dog is determined enough to turn around those very heavy boxes). But if the dog is small (same size as the cat), the box idea might now work so well.

Your cats can climb up to get into their food and litter box. Simply make sure it is out of your puppy's reach. The kid gate is another way to keep the food and litter out of reach. Cat food and consequently the poop are much higher in protein and fat than dog food. It is not only gross, but it can cause your puppy health issues too.

If he is alone with the cat box and it has anything in it he will get it. Clean out poop every time cat goes. Put cat box where he cannot get to it. Dogs love cat food and it is not good for them.

The reason dogs do this is because cat food is very high in protein, which makes to poop high protein also. If possible put the cat food and litter in an area where the dog can't get to it. With the high protein in the food it can be damaging to the dog's kidneys.

Cats require more protein than dogs so their food is very attractive to dogs. It's also not good for your dog. I have the same problem with my dog and cat. I feed them in separate rooms to avoid the problem. I finally bought a litter box with a flap door, it helped keep the dog out of the litter! Good luck.

This is typical dog and puppy behavior.

My 3 year old Golden Retriever eats the feces of another one of our dogs. All 3 of our dogs love the taste (WHY??) of cat feces.

There is a product sold by most pet supply houses that makes cat AND dog feces unpalatable to dogs. It's usually a pill or supplement to sprinkle in their food.

I also bought a covered cat box and turned it to face the corner so that the dogs could not easily get to it.

I used to feed my cat on a raised surface to keep the dogs away from the cat food.

    That's the best option.

Keep the cat food and litter box out of reach and the problem ends.
