Using fabric softener to soften newborn baby's clothes?

I am 34 weeks + 6 days preggo with baby #2. I understand that any normal or strong detergent used on baby clothes can harm baby's skin. So, i bought purex baby detergent 2 cans and since there wasnt any more stock, i bought 5 packs of pigeon baby detergent(i stock things as i live a bit away from the city and cant keep going every now and then to get things) I have a fabric softener called 'Fairy' fabric softener specially made for babies. Can i use the fabric softener on newborn baby's clothes? Or should i wait until the baby grows? I want to be careful with the products i use in order to avoid causing irritation to the skin of my baby.

There is a print on the container saying... 'Dermatologically tested and Hypoallergenic" and also 'Huggably soft for sensitive skin"

Kindly put in ur opinions regarding this. Thanks :-)

its not the allergies thats the problem..you are not supposed to use liquid softener on baby clothes as it does something to the fabric that strips the flame retardancy off it. tshirts and stuff are fine....but i would not touch the babys pajamas/sleepers with it.

I would suggest washing a few pieces of clothing with the fabric softener. Then be sure to watch for any reactions. It's really a tough cal b/c it hypoallergenic its probably safe but on the other hand newborns skin are so sensitive. Good luck!

I used Dreft for the first 6 months or so. I finally ran out of the big jugs that I got for gifts and then started using All-free and clear with no softener. I have never used softener, I know with Dreft you don't need to because it's softens and makes the clothes smell good by itself. ***Anyone getting tired of the Jessica R thing( a few posts before me). I think we should report them. They have done this on a ton of questions.

We have a 9-month old and have stayed away from all fabric softener like the plague. The way I see it, they didn't need hypoallergenic chemical industrial ickiness when my parents or my parents' parents were born, so why do I need it for my baby?

When my daughter was 1st born I used a hypoallergenic laundry detergent, but now I was her clothes in the same detergent as my own and I have had no problems. Good Luck!

I bought "dreft" detergent, made for babies and the dryer sheets as well. So far they are good and my friends who have children used the same brand.

I think you are ok with what you bought. If you have questions regarding, I suggest doing some research on the net or maybe talk to the pediatrician you have selected for your baby. If you are still interviewing pediatrician's, make this one of your questions for them.

    Best of luck!
