Why don't cats have belly buttons?

My thirteen year old was petting her cat today. She asked me why cats don't have belly buttons. I told her that, from what I can remember, when my cats gave birth the mom just licked the after birth off. I don't remember seeing a umbilical cord.

They do, it's just much harder to see through the hair. They certainly have an umbilical cord, as do all mammals, when born. It dries up and falls off in a few days, leaving a small scar.

Cat belly buttons don't look quite like the human version, being basically an elongated scar, often hidden by hair, located just astern of the rib cage. Virtually all mammals, including apes and lions, have umbilical cords and hence navels.

Cats do have belly buttons. A Vet that my cat had up North showed me where a cats belly button is and they do have one. If you look very carefully on the belly of your cat you will find a small bald spot and that is the belly button.

  • they do actually have belly buttons. they are born with umbilical cords so if you looks closer there is a belly button somewhere. very small but it's there!

they do, but they are just little dots. the umbilical cord stays on for a few days till it dries up and falls off.
