It's more of a ride, but I love the Traverse City area. It has Sleeping Bear Dunes. You can do the "dune climb" and if you're really energetic, you can do a 3.5 mile hike over dunes to Lake Michigan (and it's fun to run down them!!-carefully). You have to watch at the end, there's warning signs that if you go down, you have to get back up. I think it's a 600 foot dune, people look like ants from the top. There's also the Leelanau Peninsula, which is beautiful, Grand Traverse Bay is on the east side of it. It has alot of wineries on it, a very old lighthouse. If you're going in summer, the water is great, you can walk in waist high water for a long ways. I know it's alot farther than the Indiana border, but to me, it's well worth it. I've been there a couple times. Since you're going for a week or so, it would be great and less populated than the border area. Sleeping Bear Dunes also consist of 2 islands, North and South Manitou, you can take a ferry to South M. during the summer.
