Add a name to property deeds?
I want to add my husband's name to my property deeds. There is no mortgage on the property and no other registered charges. Can this be done without a solicitor?

Yes it can be done without a solictior/lawyer. But they usually only charge $50 to $100 dollars and then you know that there is not problem. A very small price to pay.

Hi,
I hope you do check it over with a lawyer. Do you realise the implications to you and your outward ownership? There are other ways to leave it to him if you were to pass away and not give up your rights to full ownership.
Women today need to safeguard themselves and they do not. Regardless of how well a relationship is today or tomorrow, how about a year or more from now? There are no guarantees that it will last and once you give this over to him you also give up half the value of it to him. Of which, he would have the right to make you pay for his half or to sell the property to obtain his half of the ownership should you two decide to split at any point.
Any guy who is willing to sign his name to a legal document should have no problem also having it looked over by YOUR lawyer to make sure it is in YOUR interest for your future. It is notorious that men make more money than women and that is the other factor that comes into play, should you split, is he making more money, and even if not (possibly due to not working or having a well paying job or such, beware theor are men who take women to the cleaners all the time for what they own, this is not to say it is your situation, but to just be aware of all the facts involved for your sake), men's paychecks go up faster than women and now you are also giving him half of the value of your home and what is he giving you in return?
This sounds fishy to me and, if I was you, I would run to a lawyer to have my best interests regarding this issue at least explained to me first and then both together, so you would know what your future holds if you ever were to split. Seen it happen too many times and the woman comes out on the short end of the stick, it is your life and it can be one that may become that much harder for you.
It is easier if you owe nothing but taxes, think about the costs of rent, or if you bought a home again and (what the costs to you would then be due at such as, current rates and costs) so it is not just handing over half of your ownership.
You should always do these things by a lawyer and get it all in writing, the little it will cost you now may save you tens of thousands later.
Best of luck to you and I hope this sheds more light than it is just easy to do it without a lawyer. Anything easy to just do in life, I have always been taught, I should be leary of and maybe you should too.

Hi moblopo36,
You may want to check with an escrow/title officer. They can draw up the document for you for a very nominal fee. You have to get it on record via assessor's office. This route may be more cost effective than having an attorney compose it for you.
