how do you keep cats from peeing and pooping on the floor?

No, never put their nose in it.

Keep your cats confined to a smaller room, with just a litter box (large and clean and use clumping litter which is more sandy in texture, cats seem to prefer),.. water/feed dishes in other end of room.

Keep cats there for a wk. or so, till they get the hang of it,.. they will have no choice.

If have to put 2 large litter pans out (don't know how many cats you have),.. also some cats prefer open litter pans, while others like the covered hooded litter boxes for privacy.

So try both types.

Keep litter box clean and when they dont use the box do just like a dog put their nose in it and put them in there box. Thats the only thing I know to do.
