What is the process for appraising an selling the things my father left me?

I'm set to inherit my fathers things in a couple weeks and I know the artwork/bed frame/and grandfather clocks are all really valuable. What steps do I need to go thru to get everything appraised and then sold, as I have no need for most of it? Who will give me the best price and will it cost a lot to get someone else to handle it?

You can go with estate sales, garage sale, advertise and sell yourself on Craigslist or eBay. There is also charity and taking the tax deduction. I have first hand knowledge in estate sales and I don't recommend them. Estate sales people talk a good up front game but do not deliver. They are not much better than garage sales. Maybe worse. At least with a garage sale you do not have to pay a commission. I've had good luck with eBay and Craigslist but you have to do the work yourself. Consider charity. If you give away a $1000 clock and you are in 33% tax bracket, you can save $333 on you taxes. You should do better this way than through estate or garage sales. Less work too. Talk to an accountant first. Bottom line is the easiest way may be the worst way to maximize the value in your pocket.

Source(s): I was a Realtor and saw first hand how estate sale organizations rip unsuspecting owners off. It's almost an art form. In the end of the 3 day sale, they will offer you a one lousy price for all. They will then put your old stuff on eBay or include it in their next estate sale. Just like you will see items in your sale that are not yours.
