Does anyone else have a handicap dog?
My 6 year old dachshund has become paralyzed. he is being treated by a vet and we are taking the conservative route with crate rest and medications and accupuncture. We could not afford a $5,000 surgery.
Does anyone else here have a handicapped dog (or pet) and how is it going for you?
I know about all the list on the internet and belong to several just wondered if anyone here has any input.
Thanks for reading this

Vickie - I have a 13 year old mini dachshund whose hind legs have been dormant for the last year. She has nerve damage and she will never have use of them. She can wag her tail and still "goes" outside when I put her out. We opted to NOT do the surgery route, given her age and poor prognosis. Instead, I purchased a little wheelchair for her to get around. This is the best $300 I ever spent. After a few months, she races around the house like she's in the Roman Chariot Races! The wheelchair has totally changed her life. She is animated and happy again. She runs in circles when her food is coming, and chases the other dogs! I bought this chair from a company called Doggon' Wheels. They were great. I think there are other companies out there too. Good luck with Riley!

Darn Dachshunds and their spine problems :( I am so sorry to hear of your dogs condition. We do have a doxie, Abby, who went through the same ordeal when she was 5 years old. Her owners decided against surgery (she did not end up being a good candidate anyways). Abby is now 9 years old and although she cannot feel anything from her shoulder blades down... she sure can get around! Abby does have use of her front legs and does extraordinarily well!
You and Riley will be in my thoughts...
P.S. Abby is much to dignified to use any "help" to get around :)

o that sad my dog had a stroke and we spent 10,000 for her and they just told us they couldn't do anything but she regained much of her leg use and walks pretty good then she swallowed a peach pit and we paid 3500 to have them indoscope it out and then she had another smaller stroke and lost all of her back legs' use and she hasn't regained any use of them back yet.. but at least she has a wheelchair now my dog is so happy though she doesn't even realized shes paralyzed and cant use her back legs lol except it sucks that we have to squueze her to get her to go pee and she never know when she has to poo so she just poos in theh house (which is gross) o yeah she had the stroke when she was 5 and shes a westie and the vets said that it was weird (those breeds dont normally have those problems, and adn she isn't fat or was fat when it happened
