I don't usually ask questions on here but...?
I have to write a 2 page essay for English class.
It has to be about a topic that is debateable so I chose how rap music doesn't promote violence.
We need to use quotes from outside sources in our paper, so I decided to use this Eminem quote,
"They say music can alter moods and talk to you but can it load a gun for you and c0ck it too?"
But as a serious question...the way he uses c ock in that sentence, am I allowed to write that on a school essay. Like cocking a gun?
drab1.sevent8: How is this quote not perfect...he's explaining how people say that music causes violence but music isn't really making you violent, it's your decision.

It should be no problem. By the time you reach high school and start writing some serious papers than the students, including the teacher, should be mature enough to handle words with multiple meanings, regardless of what some words may insinuate. Besides, the teacher should be fine with it - the teacher would get pretty embarassed if he/she were to call you out on something like that. I'd bet that no one even pays attention to it (or at least, that nobody says anything negative about it).
Use the quote...it's perfect...it also happens to be off my favorite Eminem song

I think it's going to be difficult to use that quote and base it on how hip hop isn't promoting violence. Because the Gun itself has violent consequences when being used by a person who wants to express violence. Songs like Nas' I gave you power talk about how the person holding the gun now feels a sense of strength by being armed. I think an essay is supposed to relate back to its topic. Perhaps you should look for songs in Hip Hop that talk about non violence or adverse causes of violence. Self Destruction or We're all in the same Gang are reasonably old but I'm sure there are plenty more recent ones.
Memo to that guy further down the page ->I can't hate you since you are just a Kool Kid maybe one day you'll learn and come speak to me when you're still listening to hip hop in 18 years.

i say go for it. Every chance i have to argue about rap i will. people blame everything on rap. its true that it can alter your moods but no ones making you kill or shoot someone. "Violence is a part of America. I don't want to single out rap music. Let's be honest. America's the most violent country in the history of the world, that's just the way it is. We're all affected by it.- spike lee,

I don't see any problem with it, theres a difference between talking about cocking a gun and then actually DOING it. You're in high school anyway, everyone should be able to handle a little line
Anyway, it's not like you are the one saying it, it's a quote.
I don't see any problem with it, but thats me.

in my opinion it's not bad..
In my mind he's saying that music doesn't affect the kids, the decisions affect the kids. Music doesn't make up our opinions and decisions, all that's on us. So yea i think as long as you explain it your teacher'll be cool with it.
But hey g/l on that essay, you neeed some quotes hit me up cause i got some in mind. I did a paper like that at achurch one time.

In schools I have taught in, that would be considered to be stating acceptance of violence. You should check with your teacher before including that wording.
Anything that could be considered to be accepting of or promoting violence today could lead to a suspension from school.
Good luck with your essay.

There is something seriously wrong with schools nowadays if you get in trouble for using a real word in English class.
taken from www.dictionary.com....
–verb (used with object) 12. to pull back and set the cock, or hammer, of (a firearm) preparatory to firing.

The way schools are nowadays...no. Instead you can use "...and pull the trigger too?"
My son did a paper for school and wrote a word that you'd think was harmless..but he got 2 days suspension for it instead.

use it if you dont it won't be a quote because thats what he said cock not shoot not pull the trigger. I think thats a good quote
