Firstly, please make sure that you don't have one already, I have seen people miss this in the past. Any PC produced in the last 3-4 years should have one.

If you confirm that there isn't one then you need to purchase a Network Interface Card (NIC). These will usually be labelled as 10/100 (Fast Ethernet) or possibly 10/100/1000 (Gigabit Ethernet). If your PC is old enough not to have a built in card it is unlikely to be fast enough to make use of Gigabit, so go for the cheaper 10/100 Fast Ethernet card.

You will have to take the lid off your machine to install it, so if you are completely new to this I suggest you ask a competent friend or take it to a computer shop. It is a 15 minute job so make sure you get an estimate for the work first so you don't get ripped off on labour charges.

There is one other possible alternative.

If your home network supports wireless and you have spare USB ports then you could install a wireless (Wi-Fi) USB adaptor. However, to get reasonable speed you need a USB2 port and if the PC is so old that it doesn't have a built in Ethernet port, then it is unlikely that it would have a USB2 port.

most indeedly.....pc world will sell you a ethernet card or for about £20.00 they will fit it .....they go into those silver slots at back of pc usually at base

Go to your local computer store and purchase a NIC (network interface card). Install it into one of your open PCI slots, install the software if asked. That should do it. Cost should be around 15 to 20 dollars.
