When should I start looking at Grad. Schools?

I'm a sophomore Sociology/History major and a smaller mid-western state university. I've started looking, rather informally, but my adviser said that I can wait another year.

What did you do? When did you start looking?

Sophomore year is a little early to start looking, but you can start thinking about where you want to go for graduate school and generally know the process of applying. Also know the requirements of the program, in particular GPA and start working on your grades, basically gearing up for the application cycle.

I wouldn't start actively looking at schools until the latter half of your junior year. At that time you should be narrowing down your search, looking at schools over the summer, and have all application materials ready to be filled out and sent in by October. So don't fret about it too much now. The best thing you can do NOW is get involved in clubs/activities, boost your GPA, and start collecting study materials for whatever grad school exam you will have to take if any. That is something you can get a head start on. Good luck!

  • start looking now if you want to attend immediately after your undergrad. Make sure you pick about 6 or 7 colleges, and visit the top 3 that you are really interested in. Plan 4 months ahead to take your GRE, and I would suggest taking it the end of your junior year incase you want to take it again. Also, you may want to start contacting the departments of the universities you are interested in and see if they have any special requirements beyond GPA and GRE. Hope for the best, expect the worst, and settle inbetween. Many students apply to graduate schools, so make sure you stand out. Get your resume in order, make sure you put your extracurricular activities on your resume. Also, try to get an internship junior or senior year. • It wouldn't hurt to start considering your options now since most schools take a year in advance to apply. You also want to ensure that you would have their requirements by the time you are ready to apply.

start looking now. view all your options and consider funding. look for the schools that have the program you are seeking and look at their requirements. better to start earlier than later.
