Why do we scratch behind our ear during a conversation?

I noticed that I do this either when I think hard. But I have also observed people doing this when they say something great about themselves (e.g. I actually won an award for this).

Maybe they are pushing the blood out of their head a little bit to relieve the pressure/stress of what they are listening to. Just a theory. Scratching an itch normally evokes a pleasure response from the brain, maybe we are looking for a little pleasure. Like scratching a dog behind the ear.
