What makes art sell for high prices?

And why can't I sell my art for the same price as that of people who look like they slopped and scribbled the canvas? I know there is some skill involved in the modern art designs. I do some of it myself. But what is it that makes their art worth thousands, while I have a hard time getting mine marketed for $20.00?

Update:

aldebaran:

I am not slamming anyone else's work. I think it's great they can sell their work and get good money doing what they love. I want to know the secret to their success so that I may learn how to do what they are doing.

And as to my art being art, I think even a child's crayon scribble is art, so I guess I have a very liberal definition. As to whether or not it is good, I am trying to improve it all the time, as are all of us I'm sure.

Supply & demand. You would have to make your art more in-demand. That "scribble on canvas" appeals to people for some reason whether its because of the technique used or the message it delivers. It doesnt really matter why its in demand, it still drives the price up.

    Marketing, popularity, demand.

Name recognition is probably the main reason that many paintings sell for big bucks. Get your name out there with good marketing and you will be able to demand higher prices.

    The question is wrong.

What makes you think your art is art?

First of all ,get a famous critic or gallery see your "art".

If it doesn´t work, forget it.

And finally, who are you to reprobate someone´s work?
