What happen when the elder dies?

In my husband's family they have passed the same names along to the eldest sons so now his brother's son has the designation of IV after his name because his brother is the third. However, the first two in the line have passed away. Does his brother now become senior and his son junior or does the numbering system just continue on ad nauseum?

I think it just continues. It would be very confusing to go back to Sr and Jr to anyone who's doing a family tree, or a history.

the numbers continue. However if they aren't living in the same state or even the same city then they don't really have to use the number distinguisher. That number is to be used on important paperwork though.

The junior thing is different in that when the father dies then the son (who is the junior) can drop the Jr. from their name if they ever used it.

It continues. Think about Kings and Queens. That's how they're identified in history. To start over would cause confusion for future generations.

I agree with Kiwi, I t would really mess things up if you went from the 3rd to senior
