He is talking about either grabbing the opportunities and risks in life - going for your dreams (crossing the bridge) or choosing to let go of your dreams and not pursue them (fading away). The song could pertain to the music industry (like Elton John and Bernie Taupin themselves) but it can also relate to anyone struggling in life and working hard to make a dream come true. That is my favorite song on The Captain & The Kid album by the way.
