avi and wmv video playback problems?

I use Winamp 5.2 for my avi and wmv video playback and for listening to mp3's.

I had to reinstall my windows xp pro and all went well. when I reinstalled winamp, it will play mp3's fine, but for video, all I get is a black screen and the audio. I have downloaded and installed codecs for Divx, quicktime, microsoft, etc..

windows media player itself will NOT lay these AVI's. I have no idea what the heck is going on, and am at my wits end.

For half a second the beginning of the AVI will flash up and disappear.

these avi's are not dvd rips, they are just like joke video's that people send around in emails.

Help!?

P.S. I also installed klmcodec385 as well.
