I will be in LA one day and one night -- I want to get the most out of it...
what should I do
where should I go
where to eat
where should I stay?
I want to do the tourist thing... not the "off the beaten track" stuff.

Well, depending on your preferences:
Disneyland is a must - and yes you can see it all in one day. There are lots of good cheap motels all around it, too.
Or:
Stay in Santa Monica, which has nice places to eat and walk around, and then during the day go to the nearby Getty Museum (take a taxi - no easy public transport!)
and/or the La Brea Tar Pits & museum
and/or Grauman's Chinese Theatre where all the stars' footprints are in cement!

spend the day at venice beach and go to the comedy club at night..
