How do I process flax seeds?

I tried to grind them up in my mortar & pestal, mini chopper and coffee grinder. They just won't break down. Is there a way to cook them without cooking the nutrients out of them?

If I were to use them whole, how much should be used as a serving size?

To gain the benefits of Flaxseed they must be ground. The problem is that in the whole form, they pass through the body with little absorbsion hence little benefit. You can put them in your mouth and chew them up and that works, but you are better contacting source of ground flaxseeds like Bob's Red Mill in Oregon. Keep the ground seed meal in the fridge to keep them from going rancid. Add them to every recipe you can think of pancakes, salads etc.
