When did NBA start posting +/-?

Like any stat, +/- has to be looked at in context... fans can't really do that, it's just a number to them... teams have ways of analyzing that kind of data that average fans don't have a clue about.

It's an "ok" stat, but it needs to be look at in context...and it's more meaningful to look at a full season's worth of data than it is for any individual game or small group of games... I'm sure that Will Perdue, while playing for the Bulls in the 90s, probably had a decent +/- number, as long as Jordan, Pippen and Rodman were on the court at the same time he was.

Just seeing a +/- number by a player's name doesn't tell you who else was on the court with him, or who the opponent's had on the court at that time...

A better way to evaluate a player's individual contribution to victory (or defeat) is to just look at his offensive and defensive stats (including turnovers)

I was confused as heck when I saw that on the box scores this year. I don't think it holds as much merit as hockey because there are way way way more points scored in basketball. I guess I don't see the real point of it at all.

Even after sitting here thinking about it for like 10 minutes, I can't concieve any reason to even track this in the NBA. It doesn't prove if a player is a defensive stud or not, it only shows if you had the misfortune to be on the floor while the other team was on a streak.
