How would you define an ideal man and an ideal woman in society today?

Honestly, I believe people visualize the ideal person as the type of person they want to be.

Most people are looking for a common ground in the ideal mate but some are also looking for someone to complete themselves.

example 1 (common ground): Carrie likes traveling. She looks for a man who also likes traveling.

example 2 (completion): Wanda does nothing all day and is constantly bored. Her personality is rather dull. She wants a man who is exciting and unpredictable.

This is why opposites often attract. These people see a characteristic that they want for themselves. They see it in someone else and they become attracted to it. Hence the ideal mate tends to be in good shape, active, open-minded, rich, successful, and happy. Because most of us want to be in good shape, rich, successful, happy, etc.

It would be someone who is completley and utterly comfortable with themself- because in todays society due to the forces of consumerism, advertising makes sure no-one not even models feel good about themselves.

So definetly someone that goes against the grain and is completley comfortable with who ther are.
