As Salaam to you all,
I would concur with Mu'afa and this list but what was missed out is, "That all Muslims will lie to get what they want because it is allowed". This is an untruth and leads people away from Islam.
Another misconception that people may have of Islam is the Muslims themselves, for are they not quick enough to say what is wrong with Islam, or being done in the name of Islam. We have lost the will to speak up against our rulers, when we have the right to do so, especially when they portray what is not Islam. To me, if someone goes against Islam in any way they apostate themselves from that faith. So to the Muslim men, then wear gold but do not be a Muslim.
Wa Salaam

Most common misconception is that : Muslims are violent, terrorists and/or extremists.
This is the biggest misconception about Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRA guerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist. etc.' linked with violence.
Politics in so called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'.
Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock.
NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS.
The Quran says: "Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors." (Quran 2:190)
"If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things." (Quran 8:61)
War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other 'jihad' is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone wages against egotistic desires for the sake of attaining inner peace.

1) Some misconceptions: - Muslim women have no rights in a society or a marriage. Including no rights in deciding who they marry. - Muslims are extremists who believe in killing off everyone but their fellow muslims (and that this is jihad). - Hijab is worn due to men being overbearing, rather than a personal choice of women in regards to modesty. - Islam teaches women should not be educated, or only educated in matters of the life inside the home. - That muslims believe that there is only one prophet/messenger who delivered Gods message, and that he is to muslims what Jesus is to christians. Or that muslims worship him, not God, or worship him as God. 2) An advantage: She may be more pious and devout in her belief in God (alone), may have a bigger heart and be more helpful to others, despite the fact she is not muslim. A disadvantage: Not being muslim, she must question those things that come from Quran that she does not already know to be true, in order to agree with you on them. 3) It is like a balloon. While susceptible to inflating, it never fails to pop and shrink if it gets too big for its own good.
