Any Westerners ever gone bowling in Japan?

No problems at all in Osaka. They had a huge range of ball weight and finger-hole sizes at the alleys I`ve been too.

The one I went to recently even had a sample of every hole size right on the first rack as you walked in, so you could poke ur fingers in, check your size, then walk along the colour coded racks to find the right colour (ie weight) of your ball. Sure enough the hole sizes were neatly arranged from S through to XXL. So much order in Japan :)

Well, the selection of bowling balls will vary from place to place. You're just going to have to be flexible and go with what they've got. However, when I went bowling last year in Nagoya (I'm 6' even, but my hands are biggish) I was able to find a decent enough house ball to bowl in the 180s. I was with a group of people including a Japanese guy who was 5 inches taller than me, and he used a house ball too, for what it's worth.

However, you will have to look....

I found the heavier ones (13 lbs and up) fit really well....

definite! enjoyed it! Used to belong to a League, and we "Cosmic Bowled" each Wednesday nighttime, with the black lights furniture and the strobe lights furniture, and loud rock music enjoying..........and had 2-3 pitchers of beer, too sturdy circumstances......
