This happens frequently when you receive SPAM mail that the filters didn't catch and the SPAM message either has a date far into the future or into the past.
Sort your messages by date and then goto the newest, then the oldest messages and see if those messages are there.
Also, check to see if those messages were sorted into any other folders you may have or are using. They could be in there. Empty the trash & Junk folders, then log out, close all of your browsers then log back in again and see if it shows 0. It's a last-resort, but sometimes Yahoo needs a boot to the head to get it right.

Yahoo says this is a glitch and will clear on it's own. Click View unread messages to see it you can locate one unread. Maybe in a folder.
