How many muslims actually think the moon was split in two- minority or majority?
If it was split in two, then it means the rest of the world was blind for one night, so I'm hoping no muslim actually believes this happened.
What? So when the moon split, what was the rest of the world doing? Were they all asleep? How can you honestly believe this happened?!

To answer your main question, majority.
To answer your "How can Muslims believe?",
Muslims believe the Quran is the word of God, that it is infallible. Obviously, if you believe in God, then you know he does not make mistakes. At least that is the Muslim view.
If you want an explanation, I see a lot above, and you can find many in google.
If you have already decided your answer before you asked, then point noted, and probably nothing here will change your belief.
Finally, a miracle cannot be explained by us humans. If you can explain it, it ceases to be a miracle.
And not everything can be explained by science, e.g trace back your origins to even before the big bang, before the minerals combined to form organisms....WHERE did these minerals come from? Why were they there in the first place? There is a limit how far back you can go in science.

If you say, "Philosophers on the other hand argued that the verse should be interpreted metaphorically." Isn't that like saying it really didn't actually happen? I am sure it never happened. Perhaps some people just saw an eclipse and misinterpreted what was going on. If it really happened then it would have been reported around the world and not just seen by Muslims.

I would support Mohammad K.
The Prophet Mohammad was NOT given any miracle like the messengers before him. This is quite clear from 6:35, 29:51.
His ONLY miracle was the Quran, 29:46 to 52. Many would question how come?? The answer is that there was NO SCRIPTURE in the lineage of Ismail since the days of Ibrahim. The ONLY recipients of scripture were the Jews. And they were arrogant and did not divulge it. The Arabs thought that they knew the scripture but that was all through heresays. Ref. 2:78
Moreover, 54:1 says that the moon will split and THEN the miracle will be unvieled. Which means the SPLIT of the moon ITSELF will NOT be a miracle. What follows will be a miracle.
The precision match of the departure of Lunar module at 1:54:01 and 17:54:01, is a sufficient evidence of splitting of moon on July 21, 1969.
Edit: @onelife: Do you believe in the Quran??
Edit: - @Noor: - Please don't give misleading information to support your arguement. The link of Nasa says that the rille (groove like track) is ONLY 300 kms long. And the pic. shows the 120 Km part of it.: Ref. below: is the link:
http://www.astrosurf.com/lunascan/AS10-31-4645.htm
Also note that the man made structure of Great wall of China, is the ONLY man made thing visible from moon without the need of any aid (telescope etc.). IF the rille (which is certainly wider than great wall of china) was that long, it would have been visible to everyone.
Edit:
To Noor:
I think, you should think with a cool mind. What we are stating is according to Quran i.e. prophet Mohammad was NOT given a physical miracle like the previous prophets / messengers. Also the verse of surah 6, states that the miracles like the paste will NOT be shown anymore i.e. whatever will now come, will be like evident, verifiable, YET a miracle in the sense that it WILL NOT be ACHIEVABLE through any amount of scientific advancement and economic budgets.
- Secondly, whatever you are quoting is Hadith. First, when you say "narrated by Abu-Huraira or Ans-ibne-" this DOES NOT mean that they have said that. There are ATLEAST 7-8 people in the chain AFTER them who have attributed this to them or with their reference.
Moreover, it is believed and advocated by hadith advocators, that the split of moon occured before the Hijrat. While the sources of hadith that you are quoting i.e. Ans, Abdullah ibn-Masood, Ibn-Abbass, THEY were NOT EVEN born at that time i.e. most of them are reported to be 6-8 years old at the time of death of prophet Mohammad.
Hadith is NOT Quran.
I simply DON'T believe in ANY OF THEM. I DON'T accept a SINGLE hadith.
I would strongly say: "God Alone, Quran Alone"
------------
Edit: @ Noor: hahahahah, you don't have any argument. Hahahaha. What a pity !!

Majority belives it split...
However; Moon Splitting is a myth...
God did not send Miracles like that with Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم he just sent the Quran. God even told us why he refrained from sending Miracles through his last prophet:
"Naught hindereth Us from sending portents save that the folk of old denied them" Sura 17, verse 59.

As Salaam to you all,
My dear Brothers and Sisters, beware, for not believing in the Glorious Qur'an and a statement within it is to remove yourself from the faith.
The Glorious Qur'an states: The Hour has approached, and the moon split. But whenever they see a sign, they turn away and say, ‘This is evident magic’. (al-Qamar, 54.1-2)
So disbelieve the Glorious Qur'an and become Kafir, or place your trust in Allah (SWT) the Knower of all things and to Whom all things are possible. Dare you question His word or even His ability to do that which He wants to?
None believers will say No, while a Muslim should say yes, so who are you?
As for the right of the questioner to ask such a question, then I wonder as to their level of faith, or even if they have a faith at all? Certainly Christians would join the band wagon of disbelief but even here they have a problem with their own brand of ideology of what faith actually means.
It is up to individuals to either accept or disbelieve and they and they alone will have to answer to this problem on the Day of Judgment.
Wa Salaam.

I am still learning Islam. I do not believe the moon was split in two, but that it only appeared so -- not an optical illusion or a magic trick, but a vision that was given to the entire Muslim community at once. Allah is capable of such things just as Allah can give a vision to a single person or a small group; Allah is capable of anything.

a minority. I never heard of this when growing up. I believe the verse that mentions this is refereeing to the moon splitting when the judgment day is near. It goes on to say that people always reject the signs.
It could very well be a prophecy but i dont think its talking about a miracle performed by prophet Muhammad

I don't know...but, I just split the sun! Did you all see? Bow down and worship me! I did it (even if you might have missed it)! Oh...and by the way...Muhommad was not a prophet and Jesus was the son of God...I say so and I am now the last prophet! May my word never be changed! I name grassfell as my successor. Also...the brain and taraja p (who you dont know) will write my hadiths. By the way...I'm not illiterate, but I am drunk...so, whatever.

it only probably happened for a few minutes
and i dont think it was torn in two and that there would be marks left on the moon. id say that if it was split then it would have joined together again perfectly
