I am trying to download Yahoo Messenger on this laptop, and it's not working. What could be problem?

I already have Yahoo Messenger on one computer, but lightening struck it during a storm, and damaged the modem. So therefore, I can't use it right now until I repair or replace the modem. So I'm using another computer right now, and trying to download Yahoo Messenger on here. But with no success. As I watched the progress bar, it would jump, from 1%...2%...3%...and suddenly back to zero! Then it would start over, and then like jump from 1 to 5%, or 25%...and back to zero. What does that mean?

DIFFICULTY DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING YAHOO MESSENGER?
Try rebooting your computer then do not open any programs except going to 
http://messenger.yahoo.com/  and downloading new installer and save it to your desktop.  Now double click it and run the installer.  Please Note:  If on Windows Vista right click the installer and choose “Install as Administrator”. 

If the above does not work or if you are using Windows Vista try using this links below for the full installer (does not rely on yahoo servers).  These full installers come directly from a yahoo server and by pass the web installer that most use.  If on Windows Vista right click the full installer and choose “Install as Administrator”. 

If you are still unable to install it, after you download the installer, you might have to temporarily disable the User Account Control (UAC).  You can easily turn it back on.  On the Control Panel (Category View) choose User Accounts and Family Safety, next choose User Accounts,  and then click Turn User Account Control on or off.

I am writing this for anybody who is having problems with yahoo messenger. Be sure to tell what Operating System you are using (Vista Home Premium, Vista home basic, XP, etc). Also what version of Yahoo are you using there are 3 currently available for download on the Yahoo Messenger website: 8.1.0.421, 9.0 beta, and Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista. At the top of YM click on Help and the About Yahoo Messenger and a small window will tell you the version. Be sure to also include the decimal places.
