I couldn't find any information about actually stably solidifying hydrogen, but there is some information about using engineered solids to store hydrogen for potential use as a fuel cell, and I think this information came to light right around 5 years ago.

If it was classified, then why would an article on it be published in the first place?

Personally, I think it was a hoax, or some journalist totally misunderstanding what a scientist was explaining.
