air injection valve for a 99 chevy malibu?

i recently had a diagnostic test done on my 99 chevy malibu. the results were that my air injector and valve were defective. how important is this and what would it take to fix it myself? apparently the parts are very expensive and i don't really have the money for that kind of thing right now. any suggestions?

Update:

i was told that i need the air injection pump as well as the valve

This pump is needed to help the emission system do its job. With the pump not working the service engine soon lamp will come on and force the computer to go into limp mode. You should call some of the local wrecker yards to see if the pump and valve are available. To replace this useing common tools should take less the half of a hour.Best of luck.
