Why do airline need so many flight attendants?

If the airlines are looking for ways to cut costs and the flight attendants no longer serve food, soda and snacks, why do they need so many attendants to serve only items of purchase? Does that seem cost effective?

I took an Airline Safety class at a college a while a go. If I remember correctly, there was a rule that there had to be a 1 flight attendent to every 50 seats. So whether the seats are occupied or not, they still require the same amount of staff. It is like a FAA rule. They need the staff there in the event of an emergency evacuation. Flight attendents aren't just waiters.

Can't. FAA rules mandate the number of flight attendants that must be on board each flight. It depends on the number of passengers. So if an airline just randomly cut the number of flight attendants on a flight, they'd get in big trouble.

Also, they're not there just to serve you. They're there to help if there is an emergency. Serving you food and drinks is secondary to that.

Besides, even if it were legal for the airline to reduce the number of F/As on a flight...they make, what, $20,000 per year? Even if each flight attendant only does one flight per day, 5 days per week, that's 250 flights per year, so like $80 per flight. If there are 160 people on your flight, woo-hoo, that would reduce your ticket price by a whole 50 cents.

It's because we spend so much time lusting after them, that it takes our minds off how much we paid for the ticket, and also it calms us down, because otherwise we'd be stressing about what it must be like to plunge towards the ground at 600 MPH.

...at least that's what I'm doing when I fly; either thinking about what it would be like to have sex with a stewardess, or what it's like to die in a fiery plane crash.
