You do have to be a certain type of person to be successful in this major however Minor in something that will help you keep your mind. Minor in business or computers, That way you can have a background well rounded enough to open your own practice.

Well, a lot depends on what kind of capacity you would want to work with returning war vets. If you want to be a therapist, then the minor has little consequence, because you will be going to graduate school after you get your bachelors.
Regardless, English is a very ideal minor. As is sociology and communication.

Minors don't really count for much in the psychology field. I didn't have a minor in college and I'm about to graduate with my doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology next year. If you want to work with war veterans, I would suggest becoming a psychologist with the VA (veterans' affairs hospitals). VAs pay very well for psychologists and they are in high demand since there are so many people fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Just know that in order to become a psychologist, you have to have A LOT of schooling. It's a very rewarding job, but you have to know what you're in for.

Depends on how you want to help....
You could look at a different science like biology or chemistry if dealing with medications may be part of the kinds of treatment you think you will be oriented with.
You could do sociology or social work to gain an understanding of societal influences on individuals. (But that is sort of limiting in offering an out if you decide to change careers.)
Or you can go with the first suggestion.... Minor in an unrelated subject that is of interest to you and may offer access to different field of learning. (Business Admin., Criminal Justice, Communication, Education, Kinesiology/Physical Therapy, etc. etc. The list of combinations are only limited by your interests and aptitudes.)
Good luck.

How about military history, or survival skills?
It would help returning war vets to feel they are talking to someone who understands what it is like to be on the battlefield, bored most of the time in this desert where all the women are covered in black sacks and guarded by their fathers, and then shot at without warning, grotty food, grotty conditions, stupid orders and wretched ignorant local savages out to garrot you when all you are doing is trying to help them out, and getting precious little thanks from anyone for it.
Instead of spouting at them romantic ideas of glory, serving the country, war against terror, or all the other bullshit the vets have to handle when they get home, you can be the best they can have to an insider, and be best placed therefore to sort them out mentally.
Good luck!
