Room Service Etiquette?

OK, When you order room service, they usually tack on an 18% or more service charge. Are you supposed to tip the person who delivers on top of that? Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I'm just not sure what the correct etiquette is.

They tack on the 18%. The people delivering actually hope that you don't notice that so when you tip you are actually double tipping.

18 is pretty steep in the first place for someone to drop a tray. It is not like you were sitting in a restaurant.

Proper etiquette is to leave no extra tip as the tip is included. But once in while if the person is particularly bright and cheery.... or if I am staying at a place for several days I will chip in a tad more. It depends on the person.

An 18% service charge is the gratuity - you don't tip on top of this amount.

But some places have a flat "in-room dining charge" of $3 or $5 or whatever. If that were the only add-on, I would tip 15-20% on top of the total.

If the service is exceptionally good, if the server has gone out of his/her way to be helpful, do tip them a bit more.. Usually that 18% does not go in it's entirety to the server, it gets split among the server, the bartender, the person who clears the trays later. The server is lucky if they see 7% of the tip.

I don't think there is any reason to tip on top of that because they already have their tip from you.If you have the money to spare and it is really good service I am sure they would appreciate it though,

That is entirely up to you. If you do tip them, the next time you order food, you will get better service.
