Steps to get the lawn looking good for next year?

Its time for my annual attempt to get the lawn to look good next year. It has not worked well in the past, but I have perseverance and will try till I die. This year its not too good, lots of weeds and bare patches. We live in Boston, so its time to think about the fall treatment. I have limed, so I don't think that's a problem. I was thinking about aerating, and then throwing sand down to fill the holes. Should I seed at the same time, or am I supposed to wait until after all those plugs disappear before putting seed down. Or should I aerate, sand and seed at the same time. Thanks for the help.

Don't put sand in the holes. When you areate it is a good time to overseed. Just make sure that next spring you put pre emergent weed control down or you will have even more weeds because you are opening up several areas for them to grow by areating. You can spray any weeds in your lawn with Ortho Weed B Gone Max. You should see results within 24 hours and a complete kill in a few weeks. Also make sure you get winterizer down this fall so the grass has lots of energy going into the winter and will green up faster next spring.

An over supply of lime can be detrimental,it's preferable to feed with a balanced autumn weed and feed treatment.

The heat of summer and general wear and tear, means that now is the ideal time to reseed.

Bare or worn areas should be treated for moss, then lightly raked to scarify.

Apply an autumn pre-seeding dressing and reseed as necessary,if worm casts are present, brush away before mowing.

Collect any fallen leaves, continuing to do so through fall.

Mow the.lawn when needed, raising the mower blades slightly.
