What is stealing the onions out of my garden?

For the past few years almost all the onions I've planted in my garden get taken out by some creature(s) I've never seen.

I put in onion sets one week and in a few days I find some missing and others yanked out and scattered around haphazardly.

What can possibly be doing this?

Update:

This is at a place 50 miles out of town with no nearby neighbors, so it isn't humans. I should point out that soon after planting I found the onions pulled up and spread around, but now a couple of months later I find them all missing. Weird...

Do any children have access to your yard?

other than that. The fact that they have been left and not eaten makes me thing that it is not a rodent or rabbit problem.

A small dog would do something like this because of the fertilizer. the smell attracts them and they dig up the onions and then don't want anything to do with them. Mice, rats or moles would eat the produce and you could see teeth marks.

Thats about all my ideas. good luck.

It could be raccoons, rabbits, opossums, rats or a bad neighbor. Set up a video camera to watch the area or you could go to your local Humane Society and ask for a trap to catch and release the animal.
