Looking for light touring bikes?

Peering into the future, I'm expecting to replace my current bike within the next three or four years. So I'm looking for ideas. I've favored sporty bikes up to now, but I'm facing some limiting factors. First, it absolutely must be able to carry some luggage. A laptop plus other work-related stuff (books, papers, folders and so forth). Side bags might work, but I've seen what some companies consider side bags: lunch boxes strapped to the sides of the pillion seat. Second, I'm not buying a dresser or some giant beast of a bike.

So. The Japanese give me supersport tourers or Gold Wings, BMW has all but abandoned any reasonable touring bike. I've seen a few possibilities at Triumph, but am I missing anything else?

    Some suggestions:

    Kawasaki Versys

Triumph Tiger (more a tourer than off roader)

BMW F800: road or GS version

    Yamaha TDM 900

    GSX 650 (new model)

Browse Motorcycle USA website for tests, shootouts etc.

You can put bags on just about anything -- Look up Givi.

Bikes that come with bags and are sporting:

Triumph Sprint ST. The 955 model is available used for 3 to 6000.00 used in excellent shape. Sporting, but can be ridden all day long.

Ditto for the Honda VFR. Personal opinion, get an older model without the VTec.

Honda ST1100 used. ST1300 Used or new.

    Monster engine: Kawasaki Concours

    Venerable distance Kawasaki Concours original.

Kawasaki KLR 650 - dirt and highway.

    Kawasaki Versys

Suzuki VStrom: Most seem to like the 650 better than the 1000

Buy a used BMW R bike.

    Ducati Multistrada.

There are many more, but that's a good start.

Look at the Honda ST1100 great "sports tourer" and an nice mid bike, I have owned bikes ranging from a honda 175 to a gold wing, and I like the St1100 Comftorable for long rides and still sporty in the corners, and it has bags and trunk' (the Pacific Coast model has an intergrated trunk)

    BMW?

One sweet mid-bike that runs like sewing machine smooth, worth every penny in my book because nothing competes with it in this class for durability, dependability, and total ride-ability.

Just an observation. Sounds like you could use the same bike the police use !
