Recover files on hard drive?

I just got a Mac, and was looking at time machine, and in a moment of not thinking hit the "reformat" button instead of "cancel" for my external hard drive. I immediately realized what I had done and canceled. I know the 0s and 1s are still on my hard drive, but how do I recover them?

    How important is the data?

Don't load a recovery program on your main machine - you could be over writing your data.

You can put your drive on as a slave and try things but a good rule of thumb is to get a program to make a copy before you try anything! Make sure you know what you are doing or you could copy nothing over the data you are trying to recover - other thought if the data is of value send off to get a free lab eval - software recoveries start for a couple hundred....

    Hope this helps
