I am currently pregnant and my OB said that I cannot eat any shellfish or fish that are high in Mercury. Other than that I can have 12 ounces per week.
She said the reason that pregnant women are advised not to eat fish is because they contain Mercury, which isn't healthy for a fetus. Older fish contain more Mercury. I CANNOT have shellfish , swordfish, shark, king mackerel, or tilefish and albacore tuna.
Fish such as canned LIGHT tuna, catfish and salmon are relatively low in Mercury and ok to eat 2X's per week.
Also, she said NO fish from the Great Lakes region.

Hey there! You should definitely avoid some seafood while pregnant (swordfish, shark, mackerel, etc), ...mercury that's found in some kinds of fish can be very harmful to the little bean!! Check out this site and tell your friend good luck!

Fish contain traces of mercury, which includes shell fish. There are several fish that need to be avoided entirely, but SOME shell fish during pregnancy is fine. Just not often, and in moderation.

health professionals recommend that all pregnant women stay away from all shell fish because of some bacteria that is in it, and i think it is traces of mercury?? the same as sushi shouldnt be eaten either
