If you lost a parent unexpectedly, how did you get over it?

My mother died unexpectedly in early May this year, just 11 days before her 61st birthday. I continue to have difficulty sleeping because of it. Her sisters seem to have gotten over it, but I certainly haven't. If any of you have been in this situation, how did you get over it--or haven't you? As I am not a religious person, I kindly ask that those of you who would suggest things like prayer keep those comments to yourself. I mean no disrespect.

I am so sorry for your lost. I haven't lost a parent, but my daughter passed away 7 months ago. The pain never goes away, it just gets easier to deal with over time.

There are some great some great online grief support groups. They have really helped me by just knowing that there are other people out there going through the same thing. Hang in there and just take it one day at a time.

    Take care and stay strong,

Try and keep your mind off of it. Hang out with your friends, and make sure they know what happened. Its great to get it off your chest. Dont cling on to her during the day. When you sleep, its alright to let her enter your dreams. This happened in may. I know its tough, but dont worry about it. Any mother who raised his son so well that he cares about her so much, loves you. A lot. Dont worry. Shes alright and no matter what she <3s you...

You're in my thoughts and dreams. itll be ok =D

the only thing that helped me out was to just give it time. Obviously this is something you'll never really get over, and I know it's hard, but over time you'll learn to accept it. good luck
